Ernie Johnson's career
Ernie Johnson is the son of former MLB player and sports commentator Ernie Johnson Sr. EJ went to the University of Georgia and finished with a major in Journalism. He started his broadcasting career in 1977 on a local network in Georgia.
After more than 10 years on the local scene, Ernie joined TNT in 1989. He became the host of Inside the NBA a year later and the rest is history. He also calls baseball on TBS and can be seen in Turner Sports' coverage of college basketball in March.

Ernie Johnson's mother passes away at 94
Ernie Johnson's mother, Lois Johnson, passed away at the age of 94 on January 17. Inside the NBA paid tribute to the matriarch of the Johnson family on Thursday's show. Ernie was understandably not on the show, with Kevin Frazier filling in for him.
Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, and Shaquille O'Neal shared stories about Mrs. Johnson. Barkley said she was a great parent not just to Ernie, but to them as well. Smith said the bond they have is much bigger than basketball, while O'Neal praised her for raising Ernie, who he called the greatest gentleman he has ever met.
